Empowering Mothers
Pelvic Health During and After Pregnancy
May 2025 Newsletter
There’s no way around it: pregnancy and childbirth place significant demands on the body. Sometimes, these demands become so intense that it can be hard to focus on what matters — like your new baby!
While complaints like morning sickness or food cravings are common, many women are unaware of how much pregnancy can impact their musculoskeletal system, especially their pelvic floor.
This sling of muscles is located at the base of your core and supports the bladder, uterus, rectum, and spine. Unfortunately, pelvic floor concerns tend to cause difficult-to-discuss symptoms, including incontinence or sexual dysfunction. As a result, many women don’t get the treatment they need.
At Empower Physical Therapy, we want to change that! Our pelvic floor physical therapy services offer an effective, all-natural approach to managing pelvic health before and after childbirth — so you can focus on being a mom.
Pregnancy and Pelvic Health: What You Need To Know
During Pregnancy
A woman’s body undergoes several changes during pregnancy. For example, a hormone called relaxin loosens the joints in your pelvis to prepare for childbirth, and your posture will change to accommodate your growing baby.
These changes can cause various side effects, including:
- Increased pressure on the bladder and pelvic muscles
- Stretching and weakening of pelvic floor tissues
- Low back and hip pain due to postural changes
- Changes in bowel and bladder control
- Discomfort during movement or exercise
After Pregnancy
Unfortunately, childbirth doesn’t always signal an end to pelvic floor concerns. The birthing process itself can further stress or injure your pelvic floor, leading to postpartum symptoms such as the following:
- Urinary incontinence, particularly stress incontinence, which causes leakage while laughing or coughing
- Pelvic pain, including pain during intercourse
- Diastasis recti, a condition in which the abdominal muscles split
While these symptoms are common, they can significantly impact your quality of life – but they aren’t something you have to live with. By addressing the underlying weakness or restrictions in the pelvic floor, you can find lasting relief.
How Physical Therapy Supports Pelvic Health During and After Pregnancy
Pelvic floor physical therapy at Empower Physical Therapy offers women the tools and guidance they need to manage pregnancy- and postpartum-related discomfort. This specialized form of physical therapy focuses specifically on the unique challenges of the pelvic floor, which can be difficult to treat as it’s an entirely internal muscle group.
Fortunately, our team has the training and expertise necessary to help you find lasting relief. Your session will begin with a comprehensive assessment to help us understand your needs. This assessment generally includes a full health history, a review of your symptoms, and a detailed evaluation of your pelvic muscle function and posture.
Next, we’ll create a customized treatment program that pulls from various specialized techniques. We’ll blend these techniques to ensure we address your specific concerns.

What to Expect During Treatment
Sessions are private, respectful, and directed by you! Our team strives to ensure patients are comfortable and supported throughout their care. We’ll always explain each step and tailor treatment to your comfort levels and personal goals.
The number of sessions varies based on symptoms and healing. Many women see progress within a few weeks. Ongoing guidance may continue during later postpartum phases or future pregnancies.
You Don’t Have to Live with Pelvic Floor Issues
Pelvic pain, urinary incontinence, and core weakness are not things new mothers need to just “get used to.” Although these concerns are common, they can be easily treated with the right support. Whether you’re currently pregnant, recently gave birth, or still dealing with symptoms months later, Empower Physical Therapy is here to help.
Contact us today to schedule your initial evaluation and start a journey to lasting relief!

Exercise of the Month
Plank Forearms & Feet
Lie on your stomach with your elbows bent. Your legs should be straight out behind you with your feet together. Raise your body with your forearms and toes. Create a nice straight line with your body from your head to your heels. Concentrate on tucking your pelvis to engage your abs, squeezing your glutes and quads to keep your legs straight, and squeezing your legs together as you hold. Hold for 20 seconds and repeat 3 times.
